Stephen Morgan

About

Stephen L. Morgan is Professor of Chinese Economic History (Emeritus) at the University of Nottingham, UK. Between 2013 and 2020 he was seconded to the senior management team of the University's China campus at Ningbo where he held the posts successively of Dean of Social Sciences, Associate Provost for Planning, and Executive Director of the Nottingham China Health Institute. He was a faculty member of the Nottingham University Business School on both campuses. He retired in October 2022. Stephen's research is focused on China and spans several fields. His primary interest is in the economic, business, and social history of China since the 18th century, including the long-run change in health, nutrition and wellbeing, grain markets, management, technology and science, and economic development. His teaching has revolved around economic development, international business and strategic management related to Asia and China in particular. Before becoming an academic in 1994 when he joined the University of Melbourne, Stephen had been a journalist in Australia, China and Hong Kong. Between 2006 and 2013, he was co-editor and then editor-in-chief of the Australian Economic History Review.
